Exception Routing

The automated process of directing AI-flagged items — such as low-confidence extractions, validation failures, or missing data — to human operators for manual review and correction.

Exception routing is the mechanism by which an AI automation system identifies items that require human attention and directs them to the appropriate operator for review. In freight document processing, exceptions can arise from several sources: low confidence scores on extracted fields, validation failures against business rules (e.g., a weight that exceeds container limits), missing required data, unrecognized document formats, or data inconsistencies between related documents. Rather than halting the entire pipeline or pushing uncertain data downstream, exception routing ensures that only the specific items needing human judgment are flagged — while everything else flows automatically.

Effective exception routing is what separates a production-grade AI system from a proof-of-concept. Without it, operators either must review every AI-processed document (defeating the purpose of automation) or accept all AI output blindly (introducing errors). With well-designed exception routing, the AI handles 80-95% of items automatically while surfacing the remaining 5-20% with clear context: which specific field failed, why it was flagged, and what the AI's best guess was. This allows operators to resolve exceptions in seconds rather than re-processing entire documents from scratch.

FreightMynd's 4PL control tower automation includes a multi-tier exception routing system. Exceptions are categorized by type and severity — a missing optional field might be auto-resolved with a default value, while a failed customs compliance check is escalated immediately. Operators receive exception queues with full context, including the source document, the extracted data, the specific field in question, and the reason for flagging. Resolved exceptions feed back into the AI model, improving confidence scoring accuracy over time and progressively reducing the exception rate.
