Detention

Charges for keeping a shipping container beyond the allowed free time period outside the port or terminal, typically incurred when containers are held at the consignee's premises or depot.

Detention is a charge levied by shipping lines when a container is held outside the port or terminal beyond the allotted free time. While demurrage applies to containers sitting at the port awaiting pickup, detention applies once the container has left the port — covering the time it takes for the consignee to unload (destuff) the cargo and return the empty container to the designated depot or port. Free time for detention typically ranges from 4 to 10 days depending on the carrier and trade lane, with daily charges accruing once the deadline passes, often at rates comparable to demurrage.

Detention and demurrage are frequently confused, but they apply to different phases of the container journey. Demurrage = container still at the port. Detention = container is out of the port but not yet returned. Together, they represent a significant cost category for importers and freight forwarders — collectively referred to as "D&D charges." For forwarders managing hundreds of containers monthly, tracking detention deadlines across multiple carriers, each with different free time allowances and rate schedules, is a manual, spreadsheet-driven process that frequently results in missed deadlines and avoidable charges.
