Demurrage

Charges incurred when cargo containers are not picked up from a port or terminal within the allotted free time period, penalizing delays in container retrieval after vessel discharge.

Demurrage is a charge levied by shipping lines or terminal operators when an import container is not picked up from the port or terminal within the allowed free time period after the vessel has been discharged. Free time — typically ranging from 3 to 7 days depending on the port, carrier, and trade lane — gives the consignee or their freight forwarder time to complete customs clearance and arrange inland transport. Once free time expires, demurrage charges accrue daily, often at escalating rates that can become substantial: $150-300 per container per day in many major ports, and significantly more in congested locations.

Demurrage is one of the most common and costly ancillary charges in sea freight operations. For freight forwarders, demurrage often results from delays outside their direct control — slow customs clearance due to missing or incorrect documents, port congestion, consignee delays in arranging pickup, or simply the time it takes to manually process the arrival documentation. The frustration compounds because demurrage is frequently avoidable: faster document processing, earlier customs submission, and proactive alerting on approaching free time deadlines can prevent the majority of demurrage charges. Yet many forwarders lack the visibility and automation to act proactively.

FreightMynd's sea freight automation systems help prevent demurrage by accelerating the upstream processes that cause delays. AI-powered document intelligence processes arrival documents faster, enabling earlier customs submissions. Automated tracking and alerting systems monitor free time deadlines and trigger escalation workflows when containers are at risk of incurring demurrage. By removing the manual bottlenecks in document processing and status monitoring, forwarders can significantly reduce demurrage exposure across their container portfolio.
